LANCASTER, Los Angeles County — October 23, 2026. Homeowners interested in a backyard accessory dwelling unit have a newly organized local option to investigate. The City of Lancaster’s Pre-Approved ADU Plans program lists five architectural designs created with RRM Design Group: Poppy, Juniper, Goldenbrush, Primrose and Sunflower. Each has a choice of California Ranch or Mediterranean exterior style. The point of the program is to reduce duplicate design work — not to eliminate property-specific building approval.

Where do residents get the drawings?

The city states that plan packages can be purchased through its Accela Citizen Access portal in conjunction with the Building and Safety Division. Don’t pay an unrelated third-party site claiming exclusive access to a city plan without confirming what it is licensed to provide. The city’s published documents directory also lists 2026 application materials and a plan lookbook so homeowners can compare the models first.

What is missing from the generic plan package?

Lancaster explicitly says each application still needs a site-specific plot or site plan, and the drawings include most — not necessarily all — design documents required for a building permit. Issues such as property setback lines, drainage, utilities and site access depend on the actual address. An attractive plan does not mean the lot can accept that unit without changes or extra cost.

How do preapproved plans differ from financing?

A city-approved drawing is not a grant or free construction service. The Lancaster housing page also references an ADU Assistance Loan Program, which has its own eligibility and availability conditions. Buyers should verify whether that financial program is presently open before budgeting with an assumed loan. There is no reason to promise that purchasing drawings will lead to any specific subsidy.

Compare all-in ADU costs

Ask builders for separate prices covering architectural plan license, structural and site engineering, grading or foundation, electrical and plumbing connections, installation, permits and inspections. Verify applicable prevailing building codes and contractor licensing before paying large deposits. City timelines depend on whether the application is complete and whether site-specific agency reviews are needed.
